For many, St. Andrews Old Course is the equivalent of the Holiest of Holies for golf. A friend of mine was traveling in Scotland on business and decided to try to get a round in as a walk-on.
“You’re in luck,” the starter told him. “We’ve had a twosome booked but only 1 has shown up.” My friend was elated and after getting outfitted with rental gear he headed to the first tee. This was where he met Jim, the man who had booked for a twosome.
“Hello, my name is Jim,” he said. Jim was an elderly man, probably in his late 70’s, but fit and trim and full of life. There was a twinkle in his eye as he looked over the sacred links.
“Hi. I’m Bob,” my friend replied. “I’m thankful that I have the opportunity to join you.”
“My wife and I have booked this tee time every year for the past 46 years,” Jim replied. “She died before we could make the trip, but I know that she would want me to be here.” Jim’s eyes misted slightly as he told Bob about his late wife.
“I’m so sorry Jim. It must be hard to lose your wife after so many years together,” Bob said.
“Yes,” Jim replied. “We did everything together — especially golf. She loved it as much as I do.”
As they walked the first fairway Bob asked “Why didn’t you just invite one of your friends to come in her place this year?”
“I did,” replied Jim. “But they all wanted to stay for the funeral.”

ha! Sound’s about right, it’s so hard to get a tee time out there, would be a shame to miss it for a gloomy funeral!
